Yankee Resolution, 2013

by Adrienne Columbia

Time flies, it flies by faster every year, or so 'they' say. 2012 was no exception. As usual, I put away my summer clothing when the first snow flakes fell . I have delayed taking most of my winter clothing out of storage even though there has been snow on the ground for a month. Now, it seems like a waste of time to inch my way through the crawl space of my Cape style home, banging my head on the beams as I reach into the darkest corner for my unmarked clothing bags. In a couple of months I'll do it, but I'll be putting the cold weather clothes away and searching for my Spring and Summer items again. I'll label the bags, this time.

Most of the Christmas decorations have been taken down and put away. The big, fluffy, needlepoint pillow in a holiday design remains on my chair. Maybe I'll pack that up tomorrow when I'm packing up the decorations that are on the corner cupboard in the front entrance way. I need to get up on a step stool to do that so I will need to go into the basement and look for that.

I need to write a letter, a "missive" as an eloquent friend of mine would say. The letter will detail the minutiae of day to day life in 2012 and I'll send it to all my friends and relatives. That should cover me for any communications I missed during the past year. First I will need to make a list of what I did during 2012.

Seed catalogs should be arriving soon and this year I will start my own tomatoes plants. Every year I plan to start tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and other vegetables by seed. I go though the catalogs, marking my orders. To make it more efficient, I usually go on line. Usually, I put the catalogs in the hall as a reminder to take them up stairs to the computer. My husband is a neat nick, last year he put Johnny's, Scheepers, and Fedco "away". I was fortunate in 2012 to find a wonderful nursery that had the varieties of vegetable plants I wanted.

I did order my Spring flowering bulbs from Scheepers in May. That was timely. When the three hundred plus bulbs arrived in early October, I planted every one by the end of the month, although there is one in the refrigerator. I don't know how I missed that one.

We hosted a holiday party on January 5, the day before Epiphany. I made too much food. I always make too much food and on top of it, my guests brought more. For the two days I have been enjoying chocolate chip cookies, cheese cake, and brie, among other delectables. I don't know when I should start my yearly resolution to lose weight, maybe next week.

I looked up the word "Resolution".

res·o·lu·tion /ˌrezəˈlo͞oSHən/ Noun A firm decision to do or not to do something. A formal expression of opinion or intention agreed on by a legislative body, committee, or other formal meeting... Synonyms decision - determination - resolve - solution

January isn't half over, I have time to determine what I will or won't do. This is too important to make any snap judgement. I'll make my New Year's Resolution for 2013 next week.
